In response to sarahbs and cold spaces. The dead.

An interesting blog that combines the eerie sense of the departed with the same kind of melancholic landscape of redemption seen in Anthony Gardner and Matthew Brady’s civil war photography.  In around this dense time of memories, ghosts and state harnessing; it might also be worth thinking about memorialisation and the idea of exceptionality.  I always remember a quote from a great work on anthropology, colonialism and state formation, Michael Taussig’s The Magic of the State, where he talks of his beginning: ‘it is on  this unsure footing, of the magical harnessing of the dead for stately purpose, that I wish to begin.’  With this in mind I add this – to me -horrific photograph. The capturing of commodity nationalism?  The complicity of photography?
