Capturing the feeling

Following our introduction into portraiture I was looking through some blogs and this was a self-portrait taken by an amateur photographer for her own blog.  She engaged with the capturing of emotion and reminded me of a quote by Aaron Sussman  “Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever. . . it remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything.”

This, in my opinion showed exactly the capabilities of photography the intimate nature of self portraits.  From reading her blog, this was taken when she was stressed by work but even without reading the context you could infer what was going on in the photo.  The angst portrayed in her eyes and the composition of her hands, makes this such an emotive photo.  Portraiture like this shows the infinite ways of speaking to others through a single moment in time.  The representation of sadness and nervousness is what makes this photo speak out to the audience and people can relate their own experiences of  those feelings through it.
